WATER IS LIFE
Environment - save water
'Save water' is not just a slogan; it is a real need today. Water is one of the most precious and needed among our natural resources. We can save a huge amount of water by changing and improving some of our routine habits. Every drop of water counts and it is the responsibility of each individual to save water. Just imagine, if everyone saves a mug of water each day, one can save enough water that will quench the thirst of a whole city. You too can play a positive role in making this happen by ensuring that you adopt some water-saving ways at home and in your own neighbourhood as routine habits.
A running tap is a waste
While in the bathroom or the kitchen, a tap is often unnecessarily kept running which results in a huge waste. While washing your hands, brushing your teeth or shaving, you should avoid this. After all, opening and closing a tap takes very little time and effort, but goes a long way in saving water. Similarly, while utensils, fruits and vegetables are being washed in your home, you should advise your family members to wash them by taking water in a pot instead of keeping the tap running
Less water will do the job
Bathing under a shower is a different pleasure altogether. But you can save water by reducing the time you spend under the shower or even by limiting the use of this luxury to only a few days in the week, rather than daily.
There are several water-saving habits that you can adopt in your daily life: utensils after a meal should be rinsed with only enough water to get rid of traces of food; you should pour out only as much water in a glass as you need to drink; before washing clothes in a washing machine enough clothes should be collected for a full load, so that the washing machine, that uses much more water than regular conventional washing, is fully used and hence water is saved. One should, of course, ensure that the water level in the machine is not more than necessary for the load of clothes.
A bucket is better than a pipe
When watering potted plants and the garden at your home, you should make sure that a bucket and mug is used rather than a pipe. Also, plants should be watered in the morning or evening, when sunlight is less and only as much water as needed for the plants is required to be given. One should even save water while washing a car or two-wheeler by a pipe, which does not need to be done daily. By requesting your neighbours to follow these habits, you will be helping the saving of water.
Recycling is also necessary.
Rainwater harvesting or water recycling are some of the other valuable ways to save water in your home, apartment and colony. You should get your family members to convince the elders in your neighbourhood to follow them.
Do you know, people who live in the Thardesert collect the water used for bathing and then re-use it for washing clothes? When people who live in the farthest parts of our country are so careful about the use of water, surely those of us who live in the cities and towns can do so too. In fact, already rainwater harvesting methods are being used in homes or apartments. One should be very watchful.
You should always be watchful of leaking taps and pipes in your house so that they can be fixed immediately. A trickling tap wastes many gallons of water. Likewise, if you see unnecessary wastage of water in your neighborhood, immediately inform the elders or other responsible people in the neighborhood, who will take necessary steps to stop further wastage.
